Richard McAinsh, Technical Director of components manufacturer 3T, strips away some of the myths and mystery that have grown up around carbon-fiber. Is it 'brittle'? Can it fail without warning?  Dare we build handlebars in carbon-fiber? Richard runs us through the 30-year revolution in aerospace and automotive engineering, showing that this miracle material, at least half as strong again as steel, is ideal for all safety-critical structures. As the former designer of the 'red bits' of Ferrari F1 race cars, Richard says bike engineers must raise their game to exploit the unique properties of carbon-fiber composites.
